Topic 6: Upgrading the Skills of Ghanaian Youth Through Technical and Vocational Training for Sustainable Job Creation.

The demand for skilled workforce in the oil and gas industry is occurring against the backdrop of an aging population of oil and gas workforce and the increasing demand for workers to fill STEM jobs (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) due to the rapid technological changes in the oil and gas industry. The local content policy identifies inadequate capacity as one constraining variable in local content development in the petroleum industry. Hence L.I.2204 requires training of local staff by upstream companies as a means of boosting skills and expertise development. Despite growth in participation of Ghanaian workforce and job role localization, a gap remains in the number of Ghanaians occupying technical roles.

This session examines various strategies aimed at enhancing the capacity of the Ghanaian workforce and the potential of Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) to improve expertise development, enhance employability, and foster sustainable job creation. The session will also discuss why Ghanaian vocational training institutions have failed to equip teaming youth with the requisite capacity to operate in the industry.
